Song Zuying was born in Guzhang county, part of a Miao autonomous prefecture in Hunan, and she studied at the Central Institute for Nationalities in Beijing. When she was 12, her father died , and she is the oldest daughter in her family.

She joined the Chinese People's Liberation Army Naval Song and Dance Troupe as a national first-class singer In 1991. As of 2009 she is an non-combatant Rear Admiral in the Chinese Navy.

Song Zuying's traditional Chinese folk songs and music is extremely popular in China and the Sinosphere. And because of her fame among China's political elite, solo concert performances at prestige international venues such as Sydney Opera House in 2002, Vienna Golden Hall in 2004, and John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in 2008 were held for the political elites in those respective countries for diplomatic purposes.
